Lagosians defy rain, read entire Bible twice in five days

Lagosians defied the rains of early September to participate in the annual Marathon Bible Reading organized by The Bible Society of Nigeria where the entire Bible was read in five centres with one centre completing the cycle twice. The programme took place in 48 centres from September 5 – 9, 2016.

dsc_0861Interestingly, while only 17 participants read the entire Bible in Christ the Rock Baptist Church, Mende, Maryland, 27 people read and completed the Bible in Christ Apostolic, Church, Mende, another centre used for the programme. Other centres where the entire Bible was read within the five days were Patriarch Bolaji Methodist Cathedral, Ikorodu and The Eternal Sacred Order of C& S, Abule-Egba while at Divine Covenant Church, Egbe the Bible was read twice within the five days.

Reading the entire Bible in one week has become a permanent feature of the annual programme where people of different age groups, denominations, sex and professions come out to read the Bible in any language of their choice.

dsc_0844Speaking to SOWER after reading in the Yoruba Language at Araromi Baptist Church, Mushin, Mr. Layi Osuntoyibo, a Pensioner said he read seven chapters of the Bible for one hour fifteen minutes. On why he defied the rain to partake in the programme, he said, “The Word of God enriches my soul and gives me strength,” adding that he came because of the importance he attached to the Word of God.

dsc_0855At Our Savior’s Anglican Church, Jakande Estate, Isolo, another participant, an Accountant, Mr. Taiwo Brown, who said he had been taking part in the annual programme in the last five years, read Deuteronomy Chapters 16 – 21. He said the programme was worthwhile as it afforded people the opportunity to make out time to read the Bible. Interestingly, the Coordinator of the centre, Mrs. Iyabo Sokunbi took time to pray with every participant at the centre after reading while  refreshment was daily provided for the participants at Divine Apostolic Church where the entire Bible was read twice in five days.

The Marathon Bible Reading was designed for one person to read per time. However, the influx of people to different centres made this impracticable as it is always difficult to keep others waiting while one person reads. In view of this, each centre devised a strategy by creating sub-centres where all the participants read different portions simultaneously. It is a non-competitive marathon reading where each participant reads the Bible aloud publicly in any language of his/her choice.
